Return Policy Checklist

Nine quick checks before you pay, so you can undo the purchase if you need to. Tick each one you have done.

A good price is only good if you can undo the purchase when it goes wrong. Before you pay, spend two minutes on the return policy. Below are nine checks. Tick each one you have really done and see how well you are covered.

Tick the checks you have done. This shows how well you have read the policy. It does not know the shop's actual terms.

Why this matters more in sale season

Sale periods are when people buy fast, buy things they did not plan, and buy gifts for someone else. Each of those raises the chance of a return. The National Retail Federation says most holiday returns happen in January, after the holidays. If you buy in November, your window may close just as the returns pile up, or it may be extended. You will not know until you read it.

What the law does and does not do

This is general information, not legal advice, and rules differ by country and state. In the United States, the FTC says return and exchange policies vary by store, so the shop's own policy is usually what decides. Do not assume you can always send something back just because you changed your mind.

You may have heard of a three-day "cooling-off" right. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule is about door-to-door and similar sales made away from a seller's regular place of business. Do not assume it covers ordinary store or online shopping. If an item arrives broken, never arrives, or is not what was described, that is a different situation from a change of mind. Contact the seller first, and if you paid by credit card, ask the card company about a dispute. The FTC says a billing error should be disputed within 60 days of the date the first statement showing it was sent to you.

How to use the policy to choose between shops

If two shops sell the same item at about the same price, the return policy is a fair tie-breaker. A slightly higher price with free returns and a longer window can be the cheaper choice if there is any real chance you will send it back. Put the numbers side by side: price, delivery, return shipping and fees. The true cost calculator adds up the first three, and the compare prices tool opens the same search in several shops.

Gifts need extra care

If a return is refused

  1. Stay calm and polite. Have your order number and the policy screenshot ready.
  2. Ask for a manager or customer service supervisor. The FTC notes they usually have more flexibility to solve problems.
  3. If the product is defective and the shop's deadline has passed, check the manufacturer's warranty.
  4. If you paid by credit card and the problem is a billing error or an order that did not arrive, ask your card company about a dispute, and act within its time limit.

A short routine for every purchase

Before paying: read the window, the refund type and the shipping rule. After paying: screenshot the policy, save the order email and enter the last return date in the Return Deadline Tracker. On delivery: check the item the same day, because that is when a problem is easiest to prove. This takes a few minutes and can save the price of the item.

Questions people ask

How long do I usually have to return something?

It depends on the shop. The FTC gives 30 and 90 days as common cutoffs, but there is no single rule. Read the policy for the exact shop and item.

Do stores have to accept returns if I change my mind?

Not necessarily. In the United States the FTC says policies vary by store, so the shop's own policy usually decides. Check it before you pay. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Are sale and clearance items returnable?

Sometimes not. Many shops treat clearance or "final sale" items differently, so look for that wording on the product page and at checkout.

What if I lost the receipt?

The FTC says that without a receipt you can often expect store credit, sometimes at the lowest recent sale price. Look for the order email or your card statement as proof.

Does CartFreeze store my return dates?

The Return Deadline Tracker keeps your list only in your own browser on your device. It is not sent to CartFreeze.
