How it works

Your hourly pay is your income divided by the hours you work. The hours of work for an item is its price divided by that hourly pay.

Hours of work = price ÷ hourly pay

Example: income of 3,000 a month and a 40-hour week is about 17.31 an hour. A 250 item costs about 14.4 hours of work, close to two working days.

Your real hourly pay

Your pay per hour is lower than it looks if you count what work costs you. Tick Use my real hourly pay to subtract the money you spend to work (travel, lunch, clothes) and to count commuting time as work time. The result is usually a higher number of hours per item, and a more honest one.

Why add several items

A shopping cart rarely holds one thing. Add everything you are about to buy. You see the total hours, and which single item costs the most hours of your life.

Questions

Is this financial advice?

No. It is arithmetic that shows a price as time. Some purchases are worth the hours.

Which income should I use?

Use what reaches your account after tax. If your pay changes from month to month, use an average of the last few months.

Is my information saved?

No. It is calculated in your browser. The copy link button only builds a web address with your numbers, so you can send it to a friend.
